### Task Outliner: Your Thinking Canvas
The new Task Outliner brings a completely fresh way to organize and think about your work. Unlike traditional task lists, the Outliner lets you work with your tasks the way your mind naturally works—fluidly moving between big-picture structure and detailed execution.
**What makes it powerful:**
- **Write and organize simultaneously**: Create tasks, arrange them into hierarchies, and restructure your thinking without switching modes or clicking through menus
- **Keyboard-first navigation**: Move through your tasks with arrow keys, create siblings with `Alt+Enter`, create subtasks with `Alt+Shift+Enter`, and start timers without touching your mouse
- **Intelligent move and search**: Press `Cmd+f` (Ctrl+f in Windows/Linux) to search across all your tasks, then use arrow keys to navigate results and `Enter` to jump directly to any task. Use `/` in any task to choose a parent to move the task to
- **Visual hierarchy**: See your task relationships at a glance with collapsible sections, indent levels, and recursive time estimates that bubble up from subtasks
- **Copy, cut, paste**: Work with entire task branches using familiar keyboard shortcuts, making it easy to restructure large projects
The Outliner isn't just another view—it's a thinking tool that helps you see connections between tasks, break down complex projects naturally, and maintain clarity even as your responsibilities grow.
### Task Hierarchy: Freedom from Rigid Structures
The Outliner's power comes from what's underneath: Task Hierarchy. We've replaced the old Areas and Projects system with something far more flexible—a system where you can organize tasks in whatever structure makes sense for your life and goals, and the Outliner makes that structure visible and manipulable.
**The connection:** Task Hierarchy is the *what*—the flexible organizational system where any task can be a parent to other tasks. The Outliner is the *how*—the interface that makes working with that hierarchy feel natural and fluid. Together, they transform rigid project management into organic, evolving structure that matches how you actually think.
**Why this matters:**
- **Natural organization**: Group tasks however you think about them—by project, by area of life, by quarter, or by any other structure that fits your reality
- **Effortless reordering**: Move tasks anywhere in your hierarchy instantly with drag-and-drop. Behind the scenes, we use fractional indexing to ensure smooth, conflict-free positioning even when multiple changes happen simultaneously
- **Parent-child relationships**: Complete or cancel a parent task, and you can recursively complete or cancel all its subtasks with one action. Need to undo? Revert the entire cascade just as easily
- **Move freely**: Tasks aren't locked into projects—move them in and out of hierarchies as your priorities evolve, with no artificial constraints
Task Hierarchy gives you the structure you need without the rigidity you don't. Organize your way, then reorganize tomorrow if your thinking changes.
### Flow Mode: Your Distraction-Free Focus Companion
Flow Mode creates a dedicated space for deep work, stripping away everything except what matters: your current task, your timer, and your focus. When you need to do your most important work without interruption, Flow Mode becomes your productivity sanctuary.
**What you'll experience:**
- **Pure focus interface**: Just you, your task details, and a prominent timer—nothing else competing for attention
- **Distraction tracking**: When your mind wanders, quickly log distractions without leaving focus. Review them later to understand your patterns and improve your concentration over time
- **Embedded outliner**: Access a miniature version of the full Outliner right within Flow Mode, so you can capture thoughts, check subtasks, or adjust your plan without breaking your flow state
- **Real-time updates**: Changes sync instantly across all your devices, whether you're using the desktop app, mobile, or web
- **Pinned mode**: Lock Flow Mode to your screen for truly uninterrupted sessions
Flow Mode works beautifully with the Outliner—start a timer on any task, enter Flow Mode, and you have both the focused environment and the ability to navigate your full task context. It's distraction-free without being isolating.
### Zen UI: Sophistication Meets Simplicity
Every screen, every interaction, every visual element has been redesigned with our Zen Elite design system—a philosophy of sophisticated simplicity that creates calm, confidence, and clarity throughout your experience.
**What's been transformed:**
- **Complete visual overhaul**: From rituals and calendar to goals, smart bets, and experiments—every part of MakeTimeFlow now speaks the same refined visual language
- **New sidebar navigation**: A streamlined, integrated sidebar replaces the old menu, making it easier to move between contexts while maintaining your focus
- **Redesigned rituals**: BeginWell, Shutdown, and Weekly WRAP now feel more intentional and less cluttered, helping you create the reflective space these moments deserve
- **Timer bar reimagined**: Your active timer sits elegantly at the edge of your awareness—present when you need it, unobtrusive when you don't
- **Refined calendar**: Timeblocking and calendar views now use softer colors, clearer typography, and smarter spacing to reduce visual overwhelm
- **Fresh mobile experience**: iOS and Android apps now match the desktop's Zen aesthetic, creating consistency across your devices
The Zen UI isn't just prettier—it's designed to support your focus and reduce cognitive load. Every color, every spacing decision, every interaction has been carefully considered to create an environment where you can think clearly and act intentionally.
### Enhanced Weekly WRAP: Reflection Made Easy
Your Weekly WRAP ritual—the foundation of staying aligned with your goals—now includes thoughtful improvements that make reflection feel natural rather than like homework.
**What's new:**
- **One-click task summaries**: Wondering what you accomplished this week? Click a button to automatically add all your completed tasks to your reflection. No more trying to remember what you did
- **Systematic reflection checklist**: A gentle guide walks you through the key questions that help you extract insights from your week without feeling overwhelming
- **Improved goal tracking**: Reviewing your progress toward quarterly and yearly goals is now clearer and more encouraging
- **Pinnable reflection panel**: Keep your reflection visible while you review your week, making it easier to write thoughtfully without switching screens
These changes make the WRAP ritual what it should be: a moment of clarity and intention-setting, not a chore to rush through.
### Keyboard Shortcuts: Speed Meets Intention
We've systematized keyboard shortcuts across the entire application, making it possible to navigate, create, and complete tasks without interrupting your flow to reach for your mouse.
**Key improvements:**
- **Universal task navigation**: `Mod+{` and `Mod+}` move between tasks in any view—list, table, or outliner
- **Table view shortcuts**: Press `t` for today, `n` for new task, `l` for later, or `Backspace` to delete
- **Quick add anywhere**: `Mod+K` opens the refined quick-add dialog from any screen
- **Shortcut discovery**: Press `Mod+Shift+/` to see all available shortcuts for your current context
- **Outliner keyboard mastery**: Navigate, create, edit, and reorganize tasks entirely from your keyboard
Keyboard shortcuts aren't just about speed—they're about maintaining your train of thought while you work.
### Calendar & Timeblocking Refinements
Your calendar and timeblocking experience is now smoother, smarter, and more responsive.
**Notable improvements:**
- **Real-time sync**: Changes to timeblocked tasks update instantly across all views and devices using optimized broadcast updates
- **Calendar sync reminder**: If you haven't connected your calendar yet, a friendly banner reminds you once per session (not constantly)
- **Event autocomplete**: When typing in the calendar, you'll see suggestions for events you've created before, making recurring events faster to add
- **Drag-and-drop reliability**: Fixed the underlying module imports that occasionally caused drag-and-drop issues, making the experience consistently smooth
- **Zen timeblocking interface**: The timeblocking view in rituals now uses the Zen design language for a calmer planning experience
### Desktop App: Supercharged for Flow Mode and Zen
The MakeTimeFlow desktop app (versions 3.14-3.15) has been completely updated to support the new experience and match the Zen design language.
**What's new:**
- **Flow Mode integration**: The floating timer and notifications now seamlessly support Flow Mode, with the timer window intelligently showing or hiding based on your focus state
- **Lightning-fast Quick Add**: Completely restyled Quick Add window with preloading makes capturing tasks instant—press your global hotkey and start typing immediately
- **Smarter tray notifications**: Your system tray now shows a shorter, clearer timer display with time remaining always visible, making it easier to glance at your progress
- **Zen notifications**: Ritual reminders and encouragement messages now use the Zen design system for a cohesive, calm experience
- **Window management improvements**: Fixed issues with window bounds, fullscreen behavior, and the floating timer visibility—everything works more predictably
- **Better video support**: Fixed embedding issues with Vimeo and YouTube videos so learning content and ritual videos play smoothly
These desktop improvements work hand-in-hand with Flow Mode and the Outliner to create a powerful, distraction-free environment for your most important work.
### Infrastructure & Performance Upgrades
Behind the scenes, we've strengthened the foundation that powers your productivity.
These improvements mean fewer hiccups, faster responses, and more confidence that your data is safe and synchronized.
### Mobile App: Relaunched for Calm Confidence
We've relaunched the MakeTimeFlow mobile app with a clear, focused purpose: giving you calm confidence when you're away from your desk.
**The philosophy:** Your mobile app isn't trying to replicate the desktop experience—that would be overwhelming on a small screen. Instead, it's thoughtfully designed as a companion that complements your desktop workflow.
**What this means:**
- **Do your deep work on desktop**: Use rituals, the Outliner, and Flow Mode on your computer where you have space to think and plan
- **Stay aligned on mobile**: When you're out and about, the mobile app gives you exactly what you need—quick access to today's tasks, the ability to see what's next, fast task capture, and conversations with your Flow Coach
- **Calm confidence**: Know you're where you need to be, doing what's most valuable, without the cognitive load of re-planning your entire day on a tiny screen
**Now available:** iOS app is in TestFlight with the complete Zen UI redesign. Android coming soon.
The mobile relaunch recognizes that different contexts call for different tools—use the full power of MakeTimeFlow for planning, and the streamlined mobile experience for staying on track.
