# Focus: Your Daily Command Central
## Understanding Focus vs. Flow Mode
**Focus** (the menu option) is your Daily Command Central - your operational hub for flowing well throughout the day. This zen-like workspace gives you all the tools you need to choose what to focus on, for how long, and helps you stay on track with your intentions.
**Flow Mode** begins when you start an intentional timer. This is when you dive into actual deep work with minimal distractions and maximum concentration.
> [!TIP] **Where Does Planning Happen?**
> The Focus workspace is **not** for planning - that happens in your rituals:
> - **Begin Well ritual**: Make sure you have a good plan for today
> - **Shutdown ritual**: Plan tomorrow and reflect on today
> - **Weekly Wrap ritual**: Plan a good week ahead
>
> Focus is your operational hub for **executing** those plans and flowing well through your day.
## Your Daily Command Central
The Focus workspace is designed to help you flow well through your day by providing a calm, organized environment where you can:
- Choose what to focus on next
- See your daily highlight prominently displayed
- Access related tasks when needed
- Capture insights in your daily notes
- Make intentional decisions about your time and attention
## Key Features
### Alignment Workspace (New!)
The Alignment Workspace provides multi-layered context to help you work on the *right* things, not just work hard. It's a unified, expandable workspace that starts collapsed and expands when you click any tab:
**Four Layers of Context:**
- **Insights/Notes**: Present moment awareness and daily reflections
- **Flow Guide**: AI-powered holistic guidance about your day and flow state (appears when you're ready to view it, not automatically)
- **This Week**: Your weekly success story and strategic direction
- **Smart Bets & Experiments**: Ongoing commitments you've agreed to consider (click to navigate to full goals view)
**Key Design Principles:**
- **Starts collapsed**: Just a minimal pill with tab buttons to reduce cognitive load
- **Expands within unified container**: Click any tab to reveal content in a seamless, unified design
- **Click active tab to collapse**: Click the currently active (filled) tab to collapse the workspace back to the pill
- **Visual attention cues**: Tabs use three states to guide your attention:
- **Outline**: Default state for inactive tabs
- **Filled**: Currently active/expanded tab
- **Highlighted**: Special state for Flow Guide when new guidance is ready (changes to filled when you view it)
- **Flow Guide notifications**: New guidance triggers a 30-second glow animation and highlights the Flow Guide tab - click to view when you're ready, not when the AI is ready
This workspace answers the essential question: "Why am I doing this task right now, and how does it fit into my bigger picture?" It prevents the common productivity trap of efficiently doing the wrong things by keeping your actions aligned with your intentions across multiple time horizons.
### Daily Highlight Task
Your Daily Command Central prominently displays your daily highlight - the one thing that, if accomplished today, would make you feel good about your day:
- **Prominent yellow post-it display**: Your highlighted task appears in a distinctive yellow note style at the top of your workspace
- **Strategic positioning**: Located between your daily notes and regular task list for maximum visibility
- **One-click highlighting**: Use the highlighter icon next to any task to make it your daily highlight
- **Celebration mode**: Completed highlights remain visible so you can celebrate your wins
- **Inspired by "Make Time"**: Based on Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky's proven methodology
### Calm, Focused Environment

### Mini-Bucket Bar: Quick Reprioritization
At the bottom of your @today tasks, you'll find the **Mini-Bucket Bar** - four action destinations that make reprioritization effortless:

**These aren't just containers - they're actions you take with your tasks:**
| Bucket | Tagline | What it means |
|--------|---------|---------------|
| **@next** | Do sometime this week | Not today, but keep it close. These are tasks you'll tackle this week. |
| **@later** | Later/Maybe/Someday | Your backlog with nuance. See below for the three modes this enables. |
| **Done** | (count) done this week | Celebrate your wins! See how many tasks you've completed this week. |
| **Cancel** | Don't need to do | Free yourself. Some tasks don't need to be done at all. |
**The Three Modes of @later:**
The @later bucket is more nuanced than a simple "do it later" list. It actually holds three psychologically distinct types of tasks:
| Mode | Meaning | Example |
|------|---------|---------|
| **Later** | Deferred obligation - I plan to do this, just not this week | "File quarterly taxes" (due next month) |
| **Maybe** | Permitted release - I might do this, or I might not | "Learn to play ukulele" |
| **Someday** | Aspiration - I'm dreaming of doing this | "Write a novel" |
This distinction matters because each mode carries different psychological weight:
- **Later** tasks will eventually move to @next when the time is right
- **Maybe** tasks give you permission to capture ideas without commitment
- **Someday** tasks are dreams worth holding onto, even if they never happen
**Pro tip:** Use tags like `#maybe` or `#aspiration` to mark tasks within @later, making it easy to filter during your weekly review. This advanced GTD pattern lets you honor all three modes while keeping a single, simple bucket structure.
**Why This Matters:**
The buckets embody a core GTD (Getting Things Done) principle: your brain is for having ideas, not holding them. By providing quick destinations for reprioritization, you can:
- **Stay present**: Keep @today focused on what truly matters right now
- **Reduce anxiety**: Tasks in @next and @later aren't forgotten - they're trusted to reappear when needed
- **Feel accomplished**: The Done count grows throughout the week, providing satisfying feedback
- **Let go gracefully**: Cancelling tasks frees up mental energy for what matters
**Using the Mini-Bucket Bar:**
1. **Drag and drop**: Simply drag any task from @today onto a mini-bucket to instantly move it
2. **Click to explore**: Each bucket links to a full view where you can see all tasks in that state
3. **Visual feedback**: @next and Done show previews of recent tasks, so you know the system is working
The Mini-Bucket Bar transforms reprioritization from a chore into a fluid, almost meditative practice. When something comes up and today's plan needs to change, you can quickly redistribute tasks without losing focus on what matters most right now.

### Related Tasks in Flow Mode (New!)
Flow Mode intelligently shows you tasks related to your current focus task:
- **Subtasks**: Automatically displays subtasks of your active task for easy access
- **Sibling tasks**: Other tasks under the same parent (revealed with a click)
- **Context-related tasks**: Tasks with the same context tags (e.g., @home, @computer)
### How Related Tasks Work in Flow Mode
Flow Mode looks for relationships between tasks in several ways:
1. **Parent-based relationships**: If your current task has a parent, you'll see other tasks under the same parent (sibling tasks)
2. **Context tag relationships**: If your current task has context tags (e.g., @home, @computer), you'll see other tasks with the same tags
- Context tags are indicated with @ in your task titles
- Bucket tags (@today, @next, @later, @reference, @inbox) are excluded from context matching
### Key Features of Flow Mode
